You may wonder why I am adding a Kettlebell programme to the weekly timetable? After all, it means investing in, and carrying around, more equipment! But it’s because of the many benefits of this type of training, and how much fun it can be, that I have chosen to train to teach Kettlebell AMPD.
So, before we talk more about the class, you may be thinking, “it’s just another fad”; in fact, the Russian Kettlebell has been around since the early eighteenth century, initially being used as a counter weight to weigh out goods in a market in Russia. And closer to home, Scottish tribes hurled weighted objects with handles in the Highland Games.
Latterly, in 1948, modern kettlebell lifting became the Soviet Union’s national sport. Today exercising with kettlebells has become one of the most popular and best ways to lose weight, maintain a high level of cardio-vascular fitness, get stronger and get a sculpted body.
Proper kettlebell training can help you to live a longer, healthier life. Joint health, mobility and flexibility can all be maintained, and even improved, with kettlebell movements. However, kettlebell lifting is quite technical just like Olympic lifting, and requires the lifter to use the correct form to avoid injury and to get the maximum benefit from any of the hundreds of kettlebell exercises and variations. This is where a supervised class is great!
So, what is a kettlebell? It is a type of dumbbell or free weight that is round with a flat base and an arced handle. It looks like a cannonball with a handle, or a teapot without the spout, hence the name “kettlebell” in English. In Russia it is called a “girya” (Russian: гиря.)
Kettlebells are small and portable and can be incorporated into all aspects of athletic and fitness training. Kettlebell training is great functional exercise as it trains your body as a whole; utilizing almost every muscle group working together. Additionally, kettlebell training can provide many of the benefits of traditional cardiovascular exercise.
So, what is Kettlebell AMPD? Combining the benefits of strength training, functional movements and cardiovascular exercise, this program is a safe and effective workout for all ages and fitness levels. It is similar to other pre-choreographed weights workouts, in that each track of music uses exercises focusing on a certain part of the body, and that, over the 60-minute class, the whole body will have been used. However, instead of using barbells, and changing weights in between each track, you have a choice of kettlebells to pick. During the class you will work on specific areas such as arms, legs, core, and cardio.
The class has been designed to maximise benefits and enjoyment, and the music and routines change every few months to ensure you keep seeing progress, and also never get bored. The music has been chosen to inspire and push you; you may even find yourself singing along to your favourite tracks! So, what are you waiting for, check out the timetable and book on a class.
